They did it again. UW-Whitewater won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tennis championship, capturing the WIAC Tournament Sunday. The league tournament accounts for two-thirds of the season point total with regular season dual matches, which UW-W also won, accounting for one third. Ingrid Stensvaag was named the recipient of the WIAC's Judy Kruckman Scholar Athlete Award for tennis, and Kalla Schaefer was UW-W's representative on the All-Sportsmanship Team.
complete results
UW-W totaled 21 points for the season. Following were UW-La Crosse 18, UW-Eau Claire 15, UW-Stevens Point 12, UW-River Falls 9, UW-Oshkosh 6, and UW-Stout 3.
Whitewater also qualified for the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III championship tournament, earning the league's automatic berth. The NCAA tourney is held in May. UW-W's fall season has concluded, but the team will resume matches in the spring to prepare for the national tournament.
UW-W swept all three doubles flights. Kalla Schaefer and Michelle Daciolas went 3-0 at number one doubles, topping Rachel Benn and Chelsea Allbaugh of Stevens Point 8-6 in the title match. The UW-W duo is 16-5 this season. At two doubles, Ingrid Stensvaag and Annie Smith won both of their matches after a first round bye, defeating Sarah Schoenwaelder and Carlie Bohrman of La Crosse 8-5 in the championship match. Amy Siemon and Kelly Rutkowski captured the three doubles title with three straight wins, beating the number one seed of Megan Born and Taylor Heltne of Eau Claire 8-1 for their title. Stensvaag and Smith are 16-2, and Siemon and Rutkowski are 10-1 this fall.
Siemon and Daciolas added singles crowns to their tournament resume. Siemon beat Born in the three singles title match 6-0, 6-0 to run her record to a team-best 18-1. Daciolas took number five singles, defeating Mara Weiner of La Crosse 6-1. 6-2 to run her season mark to 13-3.
Siemon, a junior, has collected five WIAC titles in her career. She teamed with Brittany Gering to win number three doubles in 2007, then captured number one doubles with Schaefer in 2008. She also added the four singles title in 2008.
Stensvaag is a senior majoring in health, physical education and recreation with a minor in coaching. She has a cumulative grade point of 3.98 on a 4.00 scale. Stensvaag is the sixth Warhawk to earn the Kruckman Award in tennis. She was preceded by Deb Fleischman (1984), Stephanie Froh (1991), Mary Steimle (2004), Kristin Chamberlain (2005) and Jessica Farrar (2008).
Also contributing to UW-W's point total in the WIAC meet were Schaefer, third at one singles; Stensvaag, third at two singles; Smith, second at four singles; and Kathleen Kappel, second at number six. Schaefer is 12-2, Stensvaag 13-6, Smith 11-3, and Kappel 6-3.
