Subway Athletes of the Week - 10/19/09 UW - Stevens Point - WI - Various - 10/20/2009

 UW-Stevens Point has named Athletes of the Week for the Week of Oct. 12-18. The program is sponsored by Subway.
Football Offense – Jared Jenkins, Junior (Milwaukee, Wis.) Jared Jenkins, junior (Milwaukee, Wis.) again led the Pointers in receiving with 13 catches for 189 yards and a touchdown in a Pointer win against UW-Oshkosh. In the over eight minute game winning fourth quarter touchdown drive Jenkins had six catches for 39 yards, culminating with a four yard touchdown reception. That touchdown reception was Jenkins’ tenth of the season and 22nd of his career, which puts him fifth on UWSP’s all-time career touchdown receptions list. Jenkins has caught a pass in every game this season and has 59 receptions for 877 yards in 2009.
Defense – John Jones, Senior (Oregon, Wis.) Senior linebacker John Jones, (Oregon, Wis.), led the Pointers with nine tackles against UW-Oshkosh this past weekend. Jones had six solo tackles and three assisted tackles with 1.5 tackles coming for losses, totaling four yards. The Jones led defense held the Titans to under 100 yards rushing for only the second time this season. On the season Jones leads the team in tackles with 56, 28 of which are solo.
Women’s Soccer Offense – Kirsti Nickels, Freshman (Appleton, Wis.) In a game that decided the regular season conference championship, freshman Kirsti Nickels (Appleton, Wis.) powered the Pointer offense. Nickels opened the scoring with header goal just three minutes in. Five minutes later Nickels again found the back of the net with a corner shot that put the Pointers up 2-0. To finish off the previously undefeated UW-Eau Claire team, Nickels took a centering pass and slammed it home to record her first career Pointer hat trick and secure the Pointer win and second consecutive regular season conference championship. In 14 games Nickels leads the Pointers with ten goals.
Defense – Liz Hunter, Junior, (Stevens Point, Wis.) Liz Hunter, junior, (Stevens Point, Wis.), held the leading conference offense, UW-Eau Claire, to just one goal in a 3-1 Pointer victory. Hunter faced five shots on goal and recorded four saves. In a second half in which UW-Eau Claire had two corner kicks and six total shots Hunter held strong and maintained the Pointer lead. Hunter leads the conference with a miniscule goals against average of 0.45 and has allowed only six goals all season with nine shutouts.
Volleyball Morgan Bartkowiak (Slinger), Freshman, (Slinger, Wis.) For the second straight week Morgan Bartkowiak, freshman, (Slinger, Wis.) is the UW-Stevens Point volleyball Athlete of the Week. Bartkowiak played in nine games this week, including a 3-0 win over UW-Superior that clinched a spot in the conference tournament. Bartkowiak tallied 14 kills in 30 attempts for an attack percentage of .400. Bartkowiak also served up three aces. Bartkowiak has played in 43 games this season and tallied 61 kills for an attack percentage of .315, the highest on the team among active players.
Women’s Tennis Singles: Rachel Benn, Senior (Stevens Point, Wis.) Rachel Benn, senior (Stevens Point, Wis.), finished her Pointer regular season career with a come from behind victory. Benn fell behind losing the first set to UW-Oshkosh’s Liz Leffler, 2-6. Benn then took the second set and the third set tiebreaker both by scores of 6-3. Benn enters next week’s conference tournament with an 11-4 overall record and 4-2 conference record.
Doubles: Kaylei Sorensen, Senior (Plover, Wis.) Leah Benn, Freshman (Stevens Point, Wis.) Kaylei Sorensen, senior (Plover, Wis.) and Leah Benn, freshman (Stevens Point, Wis.) were the only Pointer doubles team to notch a victory when they defeated UW –Oshkosh in their final doubles match of the regular season. Sorensen and Benn the No. 3 doubles flight won by a score of 8-2 and finish their regular season with a team best 10-2 overall record and a conference record of 4-2.
Cross Country Men: Brandon Dworak, Senior (Denmark, Wis.) Brandon Dworak, senior (Denmark, Wis.) was among seven Pointers that finished in the top 40 in a field of 551 runners this past weekend at the 2009 Brooks Cross Country Invite. Dworak finished in 20th place with a time of 24:48, just 32 seconds behind the first place finisher. This is Dworak’s third top 25 finish of the season.
Women: April Sadogierski, Freshman (Hatley, Wis.) Two-time UW-Stevens Point Athlete of the Week April Sadogerski, freshman (Hatley, Wis.), was the second finisher for the UWSP Women’s Cross Country team at this past weekend’s 2009 Brooks Cross Country Invite hosted by UW-Oshkosh. Sadogerski finished in 60th place, in a field of 466, with a time of 22:56. Sadogerski was the fastest freshmen finisher for the Pointers.
