| Where Are They Now - DJ With A Mission - Wally From Total Axxess |
12/16/2008 - DJ |
My name is Wally and I am the host of Total Axxess, the only show that gives you unprecedented access to your favorite bands and artists. We’ll talk to them and break them down so you get to hear them being real. Odds are you’re going to find they’re not all that different from you.
To me Total Axxess can be summed up in 4 words (OK 3 real words and one word I made up):
Reality: This show is about real life not only the lives of Christian artists but also your life. The good, the bad, the happy, the sad, and everything else we deal with on a daily basis as Christians. One Day we will face either heaven or hell, Total Axxess is about living a God centered life in between those extremes. Artistry: Total Axxess is committed to bringing you compelling encounters with today’s biggest Christian artists as well as introducing you to a new line-up of up and coming artists. Goof-OFF-ity: Dumb things make me laugh. Total Axxess will have a sense of humor. Many Christians miss out on God’s gift of laughter because they are, quite frankly, too uptight. My comedic motto is... “don’t take anything too seriously, least of all yourself.” Deity: God is the umbrella under which all show content exists. Without God’s presence and underlying theme in this show, all the “Reality,” “Artistry,” and “Goof-OFF-ity” would mean nothing! So who is Wally... really? That is a question that many professionals have gone mad trying to answer. I am just now realizing that I am not normal. The tough part is that I have always thought of myself as very normal so I guess I’m just gonna have to go with it.
I love being on the radio. Before I came to Total Axxess I worked at various rock stations for a number of years, and I even did a couple years at Radio Disney (that was bizarre). Most recently I did a morning show at one of the biggest alternative rock stations in the country, 99x in Atlanta.
So I know what it’s like to live in the real world and have your faith tested every day. The fact is you probably work in a place where other people don’t understand your values or beliefs either. I can relate to that. I also know what it’s like to be less than perfect in that world. At 99x there were definitely days when I stumbled more than I stood, and that’s real life. That is what Total Axxess is about.
The bottom line for me is... if you are the kind of person who hears the Bible verse “let he who is without sin cast the first stone,” and you look for cover instead of a rock... you’re going to love this show.

| Where Are They Now - Mary James Music (Mean Mary) |
11/20/2008 - Music |
Name: Mary James
Band: Mean Mary
Instruments you play: acoustic guitar, banjo, violin, viola, mandolin, keys, saxophone, electric guitar, bass, castanets, drums and percussion
Hometown: I was born in Geneva, AL but I've lived all over. I currently live in Nashville, TN - and I love it.
What kind of music do you play and what type do you like to listen to: I play Americana music, which is kind of a little bit of everything. I listen to almost any style of music – I’m more about the individual artist or song than I am about a genre.
When and why did music become important to you: I started playing music when I was four years old - it’s just always felt like something I was meant to do.
Do you come from a musical family and if so what do they do: No, though my Mom has natural music abilities and when I was little we started writing songs together, which we still do today. I have four older brothers and a sister, only one of my brothers, Frank James, plays music, and we often play music together.
Tell us about your school experience, particularly middle and High School: I only went through the second grade – I was home-schooled after that. Johnny, my husband, loves to tell people I just went through the second grade and leave out the home-schooled part. I’ve started using it as an excuse – if I mess something up I just say “sorry, I only went through the second grade”.
Tell us about your first time performing for a live audience: I can’t remember there being a first time, it just feels like this is something I’ve always done.
Who is most influential in your music (other bands): I can’t name anyone in particular. I didn’t listen to a lot of music growing up, I was too busy playing it. There are a ton of great artists out there I love to listen to now that probably influence me without me even realizing it. Over the last ten years I’ve developed an appreciation for Elvis Presley, or maybe it’s a crush. I think he was a much better musician than he gets credit for these days. I think his glitzy outfits and side-burns have overshadowed his real talent. He was a natural. You could hear his personality and his love of music in his voice.
Where does the inspiration for your music come from: Everything! One days it’s a pair of shoes tossed off on the floor that gives me an idea for some lyrics, next day it’s a tune that just pops in my head from nowhere, and some days it’s practice, practice, practice until I’m forced to be inspired.
Have you been a member of other bands and if so tell us about those experiences: I’ve played fiddle and banjo for other groups for extra cash from time to time. When someone wants you to fill-in at the last minute it can be fun. I love going out live and playing a song I never heard before - you never know if you’re going to be brilliant or completely misjudge what chord was coming next.
What goals do you as an individual and a band have: To be heard by as many people as I can, and play music till I die.
Tell us about a teacher who made a big difference in your life: My parents were my teachers and I was blessed to have such great ones. They definitely set an example for me of how a Christian should live their life. A lot of tough decisions haven’t been so tough to make because of what I’ve learned from them.
Did you play sports in school, if so what were they and what is your best memory from them: I remember playing a little bit of sports in the second grade. I played basketball and I couldn’t seem to stop dribbling the ball on my foot. I couldn’t understand how you were supposed to run without your feet getting in the way of the ball. I still don’t know how.
What's going on with the band now: I have a brand new Christmas song “Ding Dong Day” and music video out at this time. I produced, and performed all the vocals and instrumentation on it. I’m currently getting started on a new cd that is scheduled for release in spring of 2009.
Do you have CD's out now and if so what are they and where can people get them: I have four cds out at this time. They can order them off my website meanmary.com or amazon and cdbaby sites. They are also available as downloads at various online stores, such as itunes, etc. My new Christmas song “Ding Dong Day” is available as a download only.
Where can people go on-line to find out more about the band, your music, and how to book you for a show: meanmary.com, youtube.com/meanmary80, myspace.com/meanmarymusic
What are some of your interests outside of music: Horses! If I wasn’t a musician I would have to be a jockey. There’s nothing better than riding a horse that loves to run.
