| Remember When - Heidi Preul Buena Vista University 1995 |
02/09/2008 - Basketball |
Having this opportunity to coach the Rhinelander High School Girls Basketball Team has been really great - we have now and have had great girls go through the program. I attended Ar-We-Va High School, Westside,Iowa, and graduated in 1991. I then attended Simpson College and played basketball for 2 years before transfering to Buena Vista University, Storm Lake,Iowa and graduating in 1995.
My expectations for this season have definitely had to be adjusted since the beginning of the season-Katrina Gehrig-all conference last year, leading scorer/rebounder coming in-went down in our 4th game with a season ending injury. We have had to adjust our game plan, only playing 7 girls on Varsity, and we had to adjust-less pressing, etc. I feel the girls have responded well, have played hard and competed well. I feel they are getting better and hopefully will continue to get better through the end of the season. I have always had high expectations for these girls and I believe they are doing everything in their power to meet them. I would say there are a couple that come to mind immediately. Kerry Kost is one-she's a senior that has really dedicated herself to basketball and has grown as a player and individual over the 4 years I have known her. She works hard, shows leadership and never gives up. She is a very good defender and her offensive game has become more consistent, having to take on a different role in Katrina's absence. She has responded and pushes through. Another outstanding individual is Cassie Krueger-a senior who also has shown a lot of dedication to basketball. Although she doesn't always see the court time, she is the hardest worker in practice and is always trying to make herself better. She has a great knowledge of the game and I see her making a good coach someday. Another player who I feel is not only an outstanding player, but a great person, is Megan Biscobing. She's a junior who in the off-season made 10,000 shots, lifted weights and did plyometrics to make herself stronger and faster. I feel that this past season she has progressed and has seen some of the fruits of that labor. She is a girl that will do anything you ask to make herself a better player. Tell us about your expectations for next season and also any fundraisers or camps or shows you will be holding throughout the year: My expectations are high for next year-although we lose 2 seniors, we have a nice junior class returning and some underclassman that have really played well during the JV season, 2 being Sara Specht(10) and Ashley Sachse (9) with a couple more that I feel should be contending for varsity spots. It all comes down to how much they want to work and improve their game in the off-season. We also have a nice sized incoming 9th grade class that has a lot of depth. I see more competition brewing in the future of Lady Hodag Hoops and that's exactly what we need!! We are doing a free-throw shoot-a-thon on Feb 23rd at RHS from 9-1 to raise money for RBA for grades 5th-12th. We also will be having at least one camp this summer and we are in the process of getting a weekly fundamentals night going that we will continue through the summer. I feel that RHS Girl's Hoops has a lot to look forward to in the future, with good attitudes and hard work, we can continue to help build our program!
