| Where Are They Now - Kerry L. Nolen |
01/27/2009 - Music |
Name: Kerry L. Nolen
Band: Heirs of Grace
Instruments you play: Our band consists of Cindy O'Steen who plays the piano, Risa Powell who can play a little piano, fiddle and harmonica, and me. We lay track for most of our music and sing to that.
Hometown: My hometown is Tallahassee, Florida. I live in Crawfordville, Florida now. Cindy lives in Wacissa and Risa is from Capitola (which is just outside of Tallahassee).
What kind of music do you play and what type do you like to listen to: I listen to a variety of music. I like the old Country music, good old fashioned gospel music, some contemporary and praise. My favorite music is music that glorifies Jesus Christ.
When and why did music become important to you: As a child, my mother used to sing to all of us children. It was always Christian music and that is why I have that passion. In school, I was involved in Chorus and in church involved in the Choir all my life. I truly believe God placed that passion in my life and it is my desire to use the talent he has given me to share his word through song, to encourage the lost, lonely and downhearted.
Do you come from a musical family and if so what do they do: We all do. Risa's mother played the piano and her siblings play a variety of instruments. Cindy too has a family who can play instruments and has good harmonious voices.
Tell us about your school experience, particularly middle and High School: I went to middle school and high school in Tallahassee, Florida, graduating in 1979. The only sports I was really ever involved in was through the church, Evanagel Assembly of God and I played on their team for several years. I love baseball. Like I said earlier, I was in the chorus in both middle and high school. Just love it, can't get away from, and don't really want to. I also had a passion for literature in high school. Reading is still a great past time.
Tell us about your first time performing for a live audience: You know, when I was in chorus we used to put on concerts and I didn't feel like I was sticking out. The first time I was on stage was a soloist and I felt like my knees were knocking, my mouth went dry, and the words instantly left my brain. Talk about a brain freeze. Somehow, I made it through, and I guarantee it was not my best, but each time after that it got easier. I would pray through it and if it wasn't for the grace of God, I wouldn't be here today. I still get very nervous before large audiences. If I put a pair of symbols on my knees, I could probably play a beat of some kind.
Who is most influential in your music (other bands): Two of my favorite bands are The Hoppers and Karen Peck and New River. I love their ministry. Another and big influence in our ministry has been The Ruppes, though they are not together anymore, their style of singing was a blessing and I always felt it was sincere and from the heart. I had no doubt they loved the Lord and he meant everything to them.
Where does the inspiration for your music come from: A lot of the songs that we do are originals and they were borne out of personal experiences. Everybody goes through difficulties in life. God told us we would, but out of those difficulties and trials come victory and a stronger faith. Our latest radio release entitled "As Long As I Have You" will be released at the end of February on Paradigm Music Group's Compilation 5. We are very excited about it and that is the message of the song. I've had dreams and things haven't always gone my way, but I have hope, faith and love, and God has never left me nor forsaken me and as long as I have him, I'm blessed.
Have you been a member of other bands and if so tell us about those experiences: Heirs of Grace is celebrating its tenth year. This has been the only band/music ministry I've been a part of other than through choir and chorus.
What goals do you as an individual and a band have: It is our desire to go full time in the ministry. With God's grace and if it is His will, we will accomplish this in his time. Until then, we will occupy til he comes and do our part in winning people for Christ.
Tell us about a teacher who made a big difference in your life: One of the biggest influences as far as teachers and music people is Yvonne Sullivan. She was a Sunday School Teacher and piano teacher, but treated us as her children and always had a word of inspiration for us. I love her like she was my mother.
Did you play sports in school, if so what were they and what is your best memory from them: No, unfortunately I didn't. I believe Risa was the athletic one. As I said before, I did play baseball/softball on a coed team with the church.
What's going on with the band now:
New CD: We are now working on a new project that will be out in April. Our last recording was entitled "Something Old/Something New"
Tour:
Concerts: You can check out our concert dates on our webpage www.heirsofgrace.net
Studio: Studio 812. We just signed with Compass Records and are part of the Paradigm Music Group located in Panama City, Florida. They have been very instrumental in pushing us to the next phase.

Where can people go on-line to find out more about the band, your music, and how to book you for a show: At our web page www.heirsofgrace.ent
