Where Are They Now - Minh Solorzano 02/26/2009 - Music
Name: Minh Solorzano

Band: Come Thirsty

Instruments you play: Lead Vocalist

Hometown: Tucson, Aizona

What kind of music do you play and what type do you like to listen to: We play contemporary Christian/ praise with an influence of blues and spanish(guitar). I enjoy listening to a variety of music. Such as, Comtemporary/ Christian rock, traditional and mainstream country, 70's and 80's rock/pop, R&B/soul if it's not overdone and international. I like almost anything, as long as it written well.

When and why did music become important to you: I've always had the passion for singing. I started to playing the flute in the school band. I'm out of practice now. I was involved in my middle and high school chorus and vocal jazz group. I graduated with a Bachelor of Music (vocal performance/education). I love the being involve in the creative process of songwriting. Throughout college, I had joined several bands. I feel that the expression of music is one part of who I am as a whole person.

Do you come from a musical family and if so what do they do: Well, I do come from a musical family. I believe the generation skipped to me. My father's parents, being from the south, loved country. My grandfather used to sing and play the guitar, but never did anything beyond the home. My grandmother, who is part Italien, used to sing some of the arias that her mother taught her. Opera was her thing. I guess that why it came more natural to me. My father's cousins have pursued professional careers in music and were successful.

Tell us about your school experience, particularly middle and High School: My school experience was not a positive one. Having been a second language learner, I endured hardship academically and with peers. When I transitioned into middle school, I found a common interest in the arts. I began to make friends that were in the musical groups that I was a part of. High school was a tough period. Then again, it is for ALL teens. I channeled my passion for music by becoming involve in musicals, the choir and other ensembles. I was also very athletic. I was on the gymnatics team. I believe I found these activities to not only be accepted in a group, but to share that commonality. It built my character and I wouldn't change a thing. I enjoyed writing songs about those tough times.

Tell us about your first time performing for a live audience: I remember my first band performance in grade school. I was not very good at playing the flute. So, I had a lot of insecurities. Especially, knowing I had to perform in front of my parents. I couldn't wait for everythign to be over. My confidence grew during middle and high school, because I was able to showcase my voice and dance. I always felt nervous up to the moment of performing. Then it's like I'm floating on a cloud. My brain is on automatic pilot and I give it my all. The best part is to feel the audience's reaction. Then I knew I have connected with them.

Who is most influential in your music (other bands): First is my former vocal teacher in college. She taught me the practice and performance skills that I still use. I grew up listening to the blues greats (Billy Holiday, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, etc.), Loretta Lynn, George Strait, the Carpenters, Journey, Pat Benitar, Annie Lennox, Celine Dion, and the list goes on. My all time favorite songwriter and singer in James Taylor.

Where does the inspiration for your music come from: I try to be aware of my surrounding. I write about what I see and hear around me. I listen to other people's stories. I write about my own stories. I love writing about history and the books I read. I try to keep an open mind and just let God speak through me.

Have you been a member of other bands and if so tell us about those experiences: I've been in several variety of bands stemming from secular (latin/rock), jazz/blues, alternitive rock, gospel and Christian. I feel extremely blessed to have had the opportunity to collaborate and perform in so many genres. If anything, it has made me more prepared for what is out there in the music world. I've learned about people and their backgrounds. I thank God for those experiences.

What goals do you as an individual and a band have: I will speak for the band when I say that we strongly believe that there is a lot to be said and heard. We are striving for the opportunity to share God's words and grace with others. We want to send God's universal message of love to all that will listen, especially the youths of this current time. We feel the need to present our gifts through meaningful and enjoyable music.

Tell us about a teacher who made a big difference in your life: There were two teachers that I am grateful to have had. My 6th grade teacher taught me to stand up for myself when others were pulling down. She took the time to help me with concepts that were beyond me. She also listened and gave sound advise.Above all she was fair. She helped shaped my character. My voice teacher in college was tough yet compassionate. She knew my potential and pushed me to my limit. She taught me commitment and perseverence.

Did you play sports in school, if so what were they and what is your best memory from them: I was in my high school gymnastics team, I played tennis and football. I enjoyed to have been a part of those teams. I learned the value of competition and goo sportsmanship. I learned to compromise and work as one unit. It was also just plain fun.

What's going on with the band now:

New CD: We are still working on new songs

Tour: We are currently concentrating on churches and ministries in Southern Arizona

Concerts: Local performances in the Tucson area

Studio: Currently in pre-production

Do you have CD's out now and if so what are they and where can people get them: Not yet but soon

Where can people go on-line to find out more about the band, your music, and how to book you for a show: www.yourchristianspace.com/comethirsty

What are some of your interests outside of music: Education, family time, running, movies, reading, etc

Anything else you would like to add: Thank you for wanting to interview me. God Bless
